A trick used by many bartenders to cover up product theft is to add water to an open bottle. It's very easy for a bartender to setup a system where they pocket the sales for a certain number of drinks, then they simply add water back into the bottles. Water isn't visible by the naked eye when mixed into a clear liquor. The only way to test for water is with a liquor hydrometer. Our 12 inch liquor hydrometer will find any water added by your bartenders to cover up theft.
A liquor hydrometer is an instrument used for determining the specific gravity of the alcohol in your bottles. Our liquor hydromater is made of glass and consists of a cylindrical stem and a bulb weighted with mercury to make it float upright. To test the density of the liquor in your bottle, pour some liquor into the tube stand that comes with the hydrometer, and then gently lower the hydrometer into the liquor until it floats freely.
View where the surface of the liquor touches the stem of the liquor hydrometer. If you are checking an 80 proof product, then the hydrometer will float at the 80 proof level if the density has not been changed by added water. If the liquor hydrometer does not float at the correct proof level, then another substance (i.e. water) has been added to the bottle.

Can I float the hydrometer directly in a liquor bottle?
Yes, as long as the hydrometer has room to fit through the bottle kneck and there is enough product in the bottle to allow the hydrometer to float freely. Also make sure the hydrometer will float high enough to remain partially out of the bottle.
Do I look at the PR or TR line?
You are checking for changes in the density of a product due to added water (or other substance). If the density of the product has not been changed, the hydrometer will float at the correct proof line or PR line. So you will look only at the PR line of numbers. If you are checking an 80 proof product, the hydrometer should float at the 80 PR line.
What if the hydrometer does not float exactly on the correct PR line?
Tempature can have a slight effect on where the hydrometer floats. Look at the included tempature guide to adjust if needed.
